Guard play gives advantage to Spurs

A couple of quick thoughts following San Antonio's 114-104 victory over Miami in Sunday's Game 5 of the NBA Finals:

  • Guards made the difference. San Antonio's starting trio of Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Danny Green scored a total of 74 points in the game, while Miami's starting trio of Dwyane Wade, Mario Chalmers and Mike Miller combined for 32 points -- 25 of which came from Wade. Ginobili must have found the mythological fountain of youth because the 35-year old netted 24 points and dished out 10 assists in his first start of the series.

Meanwhile, Miami coach Erik Spoelstra may want to consider starting Ray Allen in Game 6. Allen was far more effective (21 points in 30 minutes) than Miller was (zero points in 25 minutes).
  • Don't blame the "Big Three" for this loss. Wade, LeBron James (25 points) and Chris Bosh (16 points) all played well for Miami. Rather, it was Miller, Chalmers (seven points on 2-for-10 shooting from the field) and Shane Battier (seven points on 2-for-6 shooting) who made it difficult for the Heat to keep up with San Antonio. In fact, Miami's supporting cast hasn't done much during most of this series.

The series shifts back to Miami for Game 6 Tuesday. The way this series has gone so far, expect Miami to bounce back big and force a Game 7.

(Update: Here are the highlights from Game 5. Had to wait until now to post the video.)
