The solution is Chris Kaman?

The Los Angeles Lakers needed a center to replace Dwight Howard, so they signed Chris Kaman to a 1-year deal Monday.

I just hope the Lakers aren't going to tout this move as being great, because it's not. Kaman offers some offense (career 11.8 points per game average) and some rebounding (career 8.0 rebounds per game average), but it's nowhere near what Howard did last year (17.1 ppg, 12.4 rpg) while playing in a system that did not suit him.

Then again, maybe this is the Lakers way of saying they're going to tank the 2013-14 season. Remember, I suggested that they should consider the concept shortly after Howard announced via Twitter that he was leaving for Houston. Signing Kaman could be a step in that direction, right?

What was that? "Dream on," you say? You're probably right.

Still, this isn't a move that will make the Lakers a contender for the Western Conference title. At best, it's a move that will give them a second big man on the court. Even in a Mike D'Antoni system where speed and shooting are paramount, you still have to have someone tall enough and big enough to take up valuable real estate in the low post. At 7' and 265 pounds, Kaman will do that.

Kaman just won't help the Lakers be any better than they were going to be in the first place -- an aging, middle-of-the-road, defensively inept NBA team.
