Patriots move swiftly

It took all of two hours for the New England Patriots to announce they had released tight end Aaron Hernandez following his arrest Wednesday morning.

Hernandez is facing a first-degree murder charge and five gun-related charges in the death of Odin Lloyd, who was found shot June 17 at an industrial park.

Originally, it was speculated that Hernandez might face obstruction of justice charges because police discovered his cell phone and his home surveillance equipment were both destroyed. However when police went back and searched Hernandez's house a second time, they came out with several bags of evidence. Police arrested Hernandez this morning, and it was announced in court this afternoon that the charges would include murder.

For their part, the Patriots moved swiftly by releasing Hernandez and issuing a statement offering their condolences to Lloyd's family and friends. It also expressed their disappointment in a person who had been a key part of their team's success.

Naturally, it is human nature to read into the actions of an individual, a business or an organization. You could look at the Patriots' decision and think, "They must know something." But, there is something else we must remember: in the United States, everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Right now, Hernandez is charged with murder. It's up to a jury of his peers in a court of law to decide whether he is guilty or not.

The Patriots were quick to rid themselves of Hernandez. It's up to the legal system to determine Hernandez's fate.
