Bergeron suffers another injury

Boston Bruins center Patrice Bergeron paid a price for playing with a broken rib and a separated shoulder in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

Bergeron went to a Boston hospital for what is being reported as a small puncture in one of his lungs and was still there as of Wednesday, according to ESPNBoston.com (see story here).

I don't even know how Bergeron played in that game. A broken rib is one thing, but trying to play with a separated shoulder in a sport which requires the use of both arms is a feat unto itself. Though Bergeron wasn't effective in terms of generating offense (no shots on goal), he did manage to win five out of the 11 face-offs he took. That's still really good for a man operating with one fully-functional shoulder.

It should be noted that Bergeron isn't the first hockey player to skate in a Stanley Cup Final with a serious injury. The best example is Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Bob Baun. During the 1964 finals against Detroit, Baun suffered what was believed to be a broken ankle in the third period of a tied game. Baun came back and scored the winning goal in overtime to give Toronto the victory, and the Maple Leafs went on to win the Stanley Cup in Game 7.

Still, Bergeron showed incredible courage (and maybe a little bullheadedness) in playing through his injuries in Game 6.
