A slice of hockey history

My friend Wayne Henning from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation sent me this note via my blog's Facebook page:

Hey Rob,

Along with a couple of my CBC colleagues we're launching a new section of the network's Digital Archives website. It'll showcase newly discovered interviews and radio features found in our tape vaults.

Our first offering will be a feature commentary on the life of Marguerite Norris, President of the Detroit Red Wings from 1951 to 1954.

The piece has been rushed to completion in order for it to coincide with the hockey playoffs. In the weeks ahead the section will be given a title and developed to look different than the regular site.

In coming weeks I'll have a 1948 interview with Branch Rickey and a 1987 interview with a 48-year-old Phil Niekro when he was ending his career with the (Toronto) Blue Jays.

For those of you who don't know your hockey history, Marguerite Norris was the first woman to have her name engraved on the Stanley Cup as the Red Wings won two titles during her time as the club's president. And since we're closing in on determining a winner in this year's Stanley Cup Finals, what better time than now to hear this rediscovered radio interview featuring Norris, Gordie Howe, Red Kelly and Marcel Pronovost?

Here is the link to the Marguerite Norris interview. I will also be linking to other CBC Radio archived interviews in the weeks ahead when they are ready. And my personal thanks to Wayne for telling me about this series.
