A's are all aces against Yankees

The Oakland A's have the New York Yankees' number this season.

The A's won five of their six meetings with the Yankees -- seven if you factor in the nine extra innings they played to win 3-2 today. The Yankees never scored more than four runs in any game against Oakland, and they managed only three home runs. For a team that has gone deep 70 times in 65 games this season, that's a small number.

What's more impressive is what the A's have done overall. They lead the American League West by two games over Texas with a 41-27 record. Today's win is Oakland's second in a game lasting 18 or more innings this season, and the A's own a 6-2 record in all extra-inning games in 2013. They also extended their season-best home winning streak to 11 games.

The next seven days will be interesting ones for the A's. They host Seattle this weekend before traveling to Arlington for four games against the Rangers. Either Oakland solidifies its hold on the AL West lead, or Texas -- which hosts AL East cellar dweller Toronto this weekend -- keeps things very tight.

Meanwhile, the Yankees get to lick their wounds by continuing down the Pacific coast this weekend to face the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (the most unwieldy name for a Major League Baseball team). Ordinarily, that might be good news for the Yankees, but the Angels are slated to send C.J. Wilson, Tommy Hanson and Jered Weaver to the pitcher's mound. Though none of them are having great seasons, any of them are capable of pitching a gem against a Yankees team that has fallen off a bit at the plate since Memorial Day Weekend.
