Even though there were candidates out there with more coaching experience, the Nets went with the recently-retired point guard who guided them to the NBA Finals in 2002 and 2003 and won a title with the Dallas Mavericks.
I'm not certain if Kidd is ready to call the shots as a head coach (which is why his top assistant is NBA coaching veteran Lawrence Frank), but he'll certainly have the respect of the Nets locker room to start off -- especially his friend, Deron Williams. That's what being a consistent winner and a leader on the court for 19 years can do for a guy. But the moment he has to bench someone or make a match-up decision in a close game, we'll see what Kidd is really made of. If he makes the right calls consistently, then the Nets will be a better team.
If nothing else, it gives the Nets an opportunity to remind Brooklyn fans of the good old days ... when they were playing in New Jersey, and nobody in Brooklyn cared.
